Bandai Namco announced a new game for the Gundam franchise. It’s called Gundam Evolution, and it’s quite the strange one. It’s a team shooter, and you’ll be forgiven if your first thought when you see the trailer is Overwatch.
You can watch the trailer for Gundam Evolution embedded below. From the description, it looks to be a 6v6 team shooter. And naturally, you’ll be piloting the mechs from the franchise. The current roster is pretty small, but it’s probably safe to expect it to be vastly expanded in time.

For now the showcased mechs in the Gundam Evolution trailer are mostly from the UC timeline. In their order of appearance in the trailer, we have the original Gundam, the transformable Asshimar, the GM Sniper II, the Dom Trooper from the SEED Destiny series, the Sazabi, and Gundam Barbatos from Iron Blooded Orphans.
But eagle-eyed fans of the franchise will be able to see other units in the gameplay UI. These include the Guntank, a Zaku II, a standard GM, and even Turn A Gundam. Other units include what looks like a GM Dominance, and what looks like a Palace Athene. This makes for exactly 12 units in a 6v6 game.

Gundam Evolution is slated for release in 2022, so it’s still a long way away. The only announced platform it will be available for now is PC. It will also be a free-to-play title, which is also strange. But closer to the present, Bandai will be having a closed beta test in Japan on 8 and 9 August.
