Very late last month, Sony Interactive Entertainment announced the acquisition of Housemarque, the devs of Returnal. No doubt it was a significant acquisition, adding a new studio to the company’s already strong exclusive games library. But the company had let slip another, potentially more important acquisition.
Twitter user @Nibellion shared a now deleted tweet by PlayStation Japan that made a slightly different acquisition announcement. The image shows PlayStation Studios welcoming Bluepoint Games instead of Housemarque. This is likely something that’s still being discussed behind the scenes, and is supposed to be announced at a later date. The image sees a strip of the Demon Souls remake cover next to Returnal, indicating that the addition of the studio comes after Housemarque.

Bluepoint Games are most well-known these days for their remasters and remakes. From the likes of Shadow of the Colossus to Demon Souls, the company has modernised many older games for the PlayStation console platform. So the acquisition definitely makes sense. But it’s also sending the internet into a tizzy, as people try to connect this to rumours of other remakes that Bluepoint is currently working on. One prominent title in the rumour mill is a remake of Metal Gear Solid.
Ultimately, this wouldn’t change much to what we can expect from SIE. The more prominent games by Bluepoint are PS exclusives anyway. The company is likely to make the official acquisition announcement some time soon. But definitely take the MGS remake with a grain of salt.
