Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin has announced that a total lockdown will be enforced throughout the country starting from 1 June 2021. This decision was made after COVID-19 positive cases breached the 8,000 mark today.
Phase 1 of this total lockdown will last until 14 June 2021 and will involve the closure of all social as well as economic sectors with the exception of essential services that will be determined by the National Security Council (MKN).
If the implementation is able to reduce daily COVID-19 cases, Phase 2 will kick in and would last for four weeks. During this particular phase, several economic sectors that don’t involve mass gatherings will be allowed to operate.
As for Phase 3, it will be identical to the existing Movement Control Order (MCO) implementation in which most economic activities will be allowed to function with certain limitations on social activities. Naturally, the decision to move from one phase to another will be based on risk assessment by the Ministry of Health.
The assessment would be done based on daily cases and the ability of hospitals throughout the country to handle COVID-19 cases. PM Muhyiddin also said that the government was planning to increase the vaccination rate in the country in the coming weeks in order to achieve herd immunity.
Furthermore, the Ministry of Finance will also announce financial aids to assist the Rakyat and the economy as the nation goes through yet another huge storm that would likely last for the next few months. However, PM Muhyiddin didn’t reveal when exactly the announcement will be made by the said ministry.
As you can see, there are still plenty of details regarding the full lockdown implementation that has yet to be revealed by the government. So, expect several announcements to be made by the government within the next few days as we get closer to 1 June.
