The Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) in partnership with Sunway Education Group (SEG) saw the first cohort of students admitted to the 42KL campus – Malaysia’s first coding school that claims to have zero tuition fees, zero teachers, and zero traditional classrooms.
Yes, you read that right – zero tuition fees.
42KL, located in Sunway FutureX, is based on the intriguing concept of peer-to-peer learning, where there are no formal classes or teachers – students take charge over their own pace of learning and tutor each other in a 100% hands-on project environment.
There are educational staff but they only create the framework to guide students through the curriculum. There is a network of similar 42 coding schools around the world. The first was established in Paris, France, in 2013, and the second in Silicon Valley, the US, in 2016.
From the time the 42KL website was launched in July 2020 until 1 January 2021, a total of 3,600 people have signed up. Over 600 have passed 42KL’s initial online test and 225 are completing its Piscine bootcamp. So far, 75 applicants have successfully enrolled as students in the 12-month Core Programme.
42KL students are notably young and diverse, with well over 50% coming from the B40 income group and aged between 18 and 49 years old. To learn more about 42KL and to apply, you can visit its official website.
