PS5 exclusive Returnal has released the most recent patch, version 1.3.3. But almost immediately after its release, the devs at Housemarque are pulling the patch. This is because while it fixes some bugs for the game, it also introduced a new one. And this new one affects save files.
Patch 1.3.3 of Returnal has caused the game to spring an error pop-up that reads “Something went wrong.(CE-100028-1)” constantly. Players report that, most commonly, progress that they make is not saved. At worst, the save file itself is lost. Which is bad because, as a rogue-lite, meaningful progress for the game is made when you pick up an artifact that you don’t lose on death. But the bug makes this impossible.
So to be safe, don't start the game before the upcoming patch is available and downloaded.

Housemarque says that it is pulling the patch 1.3.3 and reverting to the previous 1.3.1 version. If you’ve already downloaded the problematic patch, you’ll have to redownload the game. But even then, the devs say don’t play Returnal until a fix for this has been issued to be safe.

It’s definitely a strange situation for a game like Returnal. If it were a pure rogue-like, it wouldn’t have been that great an issue. But it’s precisely because it’s a rogue-lite that every bit of progress is so meaningful. And it hurts that much more when it is lost.
