Discord may have decided to not get acquired by Microsoft, but it looks like the company isn’t against outside investors. Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced that it is now a minority investor in the company. And as a result, it is working to integrate the voice and messaging service into its PlayStation consoles.
Though in the announcement blog post, company head Jim Ryan provided little in terms of details. He said the two companies will work to bring both closer together on console and mobile starting early next year. But no exact details on what that would actually look like, beyond a mention of the PlayStation Network.
One can hope that this means Discord integration into PlayStation consoles. While the PS voice chat system works fine with other players in a multiplayer session, sometimes you may just want to chat with another group of people while playing your game. That currently involved running Discord on your phone. And that is not the optimal experience, to say the least.
Ultimately, it remains unknown what the partnership between PlayStation and Discord will ultimately mean. Either company may release more details as time goes on, or we find out next year when it happens.
