The Selangor state government has announced that it will soon establish an esports development centre in Section 13, Shah Alam. This effort is also revealed to be a collaboration between the state and several different bodies including the Selangor State Sports Council (MSNS), Esports Selangor Association (ESS), Selangor Football Association (FAS) and Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM).
Mohd Khairuddin Othman, the state’s executive councillor for sports development, said that RM3 million is allocated for this effort which will see the renovation of the former Carlton Hotel building in Shah Alam. For those unaware, the hotel, located in Section 13, closed down permanently in August 2020. It is revealed that the hotel’s closure was due to the expiration of the lease agreement between its operator and Darul Ehsan Facilities Management Sdn Bhd (DEFM).
The new facility will be equipped with a training academy, studio, teaching staff, and accommodation. Khairuddin said that the renovation is expected to be completed by the end of this year.
“This effort allows us to design training modules to produce professional esports players,” he added. The councillor also expressed that esports will soon become a career that is capable of providing athletes with lucrative income through competitive gaming.
