Four years ago, Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) had embarked on one of its biggest endeavours to date: moving the country from the traditional energy meter to the new Smart Meter. Given the fact that TNB serves the majority of the population in Malaysia, this is clearly not an easy task.
The rollout originally started in Melaka before Klang Valley was added to the mix. Just last month, TNB has since revealed that the upgrade effort has reached a major milestone with one million Smart Meters successfully installed in customer’s premises throughout both regions.
“A big factor in all of this are our customers, who continue to play a critical role in the success of this nationwide rollout as they continue to seek more empowering ways to manage their energy consumption.
Heading into 2021, we hope to see more customers take control from using Smart Meters, and being empowered to make energy-efficient choices for themselves and the nation as a whole, towards a greener and more sustainable energy future.”- Datuk Ir. Baharin Din, President and CEO of TNB.
In case you have not heard of the Smart Meter before, it generally still has the same purpose as the existing energy meter which is to measure and display the electricity consumption readings for your home. However, what makes it different though is the fact that you are now able to monitor your home’s electricity consumption directly through the myTNB app.
Having the information directly at your fingertips would also allow you to make the right decisions in regards to your home’s energy usage. This not only helps you to save electricity but also your money in the long run, provided that you match the information that you received from the myTNB app with the correct energy-savings habits.
Aside from that, the myTNB app also allows you to view and pay bills anytime and anywhere. So that’s a huge factor of convenience and time-saving as well, which is why there was a huge increase of myTNB users from 1.4 million to 4.7 million during the period between December 2019 to December 2020.
All in all, TNB’s Smart Meters and the myTNB app can be seen as the company’s effort to help more Malaysians to embrace digital platforms in their life as well as empowering them to become informed and savvy consumers.
If your home is not yet equipped with the new Smart Meter, fret not, TNB is already on its way. This is especially true for the Klang Valley residents as the company has planned to further increase the Smart Meter installation rate in the region throughout 2021.
Don’t worry, TNB will inform you beforehand when it is ready to visit your home to upgrade your current energy meter to the new Smart Meter. To learn more, make sure to check out Smart Meter’s official website over at mytnb.com.my/smart-meter.
