During a special address to mark the arrival of 2021, Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin has revealed that the government will be launching the National Digital Policy (NDP) within the first quarter of 2021. The policy will be part of the upcoming 12th Malaysia Plan (RMK-12) that is going to take place from 2021 to 2025.
PM Muhyiddin stated that the RMK-12 will be focusing on several new economic drivers such as the digital and green economy. He further added that physical and digital infrastructure will be built in both urban and rural areas to ensure the country can compete for these new economic opportunities at the global stage.
Hence, this has led to the establishment of the NDP which will have a focus on the development of 5G network. This is a rather interesting revelation since we were already aware that the commercial availability of 5G network in Malaysia is expected to take place only at the end of 2022 or early 2023.
However, no further details regarding NDP were discussed by the PM during tonight’s speech. That being said, PM Muhyiddin did also point out that the RMK-12 will provide a clearer look at Malaysia’s economic vision for the new decade.
