UPDATE (11 Nov – 10:56PM): In case you missed it, SIE has officially announced the pricing and launch date for PS5 in Malaysia. The price tag is not too bad when compared to the rest of the world too.
ORIGINAL STORY (9 Nov – 5:28 PM):
It is a tale as old as time: when a product is not released in Malaysia, you can still satisfy your craving of the product by obtaining it from parallel importers. Among prominent examples include the Xbox consoles, Google Pixel phones, Xiaomi Mi TVs, and many more.
Sometimes, all it takes to make consumers turn to importers is a delayed launch date. Such as in the case with PlayStation 5 as Sony Interactive Entertainment still has not announced the release date and pricing for the console in Malaysia even though it has appeared on PlayStation Malaysia’s website.
Just take a look at this listing that a local game shop, CT Game Store posted last weekend:
As a reference, the PS5 Digital Edition is officially priced at HKD 3180 (RM 1687) while the PS5 with Blu-ray disc drive goes for HKD 3980 (RM 2111). So, in general, you are looking at an overhead cost of more than RM 2000, even if you consider the shipping charges to have these consoles delivered to Malaysia:
Now, we don’t intend to tell you how you should spend your hard-earned money. However, before you take the plunge and begin planning to flex PS5 all over your social media this coming December, do consider the fact that an imported unit may not come with proper after-sales support.
Also, unlike Xbox Series S or Xbox Series X, PS5 is definitely making its way to Malaysia. It is really just a matter of when and how much but nevertheless, we don’t think the official pricing of the console will reach the RM 3000 mark when it reaches here.
