There are many wearables out there that support Spotify. However, the exact Spotify features that are available for them vary from one device to another and Apple Watch has recently received among the rarest feature of them all: direct streaming.
The direct streaming feature for the Spotify app on Apple Watch had actually been discovered back in September. Soon after, the company had begun to quietly roll out the feature to users with many of them began to see it on their Apple Watch earlier this week.
In general, there is nothing that users need to do to obtain this functionality on their Apple Watch aside from waiting for it to show up on their device and provided that they are also Spotify Premium users. A notice, which we have shown above, will appear once the feature is already available on their Apple Watch.
To activate the streaming option, just tap on the device icon on the bottom right section of the Spotify app and choose Apple Watch in the “Play on a device” screen. As you can see in the image below, the feature is still in beta despite made available widely to users, so expect it to be wonky from time to time.
While the new direct streaming feature has finally made the Spotify app on Apple Watch way more useful than before, it only works when there is an Internet connection whether through Wi-Fi or cellular connectivity. In other words, the Spotify app on Apple Watch still does not support offline playback.
If you need or prefer to utilise offline playback instead of direct streaming, you have to turn to other music streaming services such as Apple Music or Pandora for the time being.
