Spotify has silently rolled out a minor but helpful update that allows users to search for songs by simply typing in their lyrics. News of this was made known by the music streaming platform‘s designer Lin Wang via her personal Twitter account earlier today.
This is indeed a handy feature to have if you could only recall a song by its lyrics. Especially when you have no clue of what its title may be and even more so when you’re not familiar with the singer or band behind it.
My team just shipped something on iOS and Android –

Straightforward enough, all you need to do is enter the song lyrics in the search bar and let Spotify do its magic. Songs that include the exact or similar lyrics will be listed out in the results, with the highest matches bearing a “Lyrics match” tag. One example that we tried with this feature is Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody, where the entirety of the song does not feature its title in its lyrics whatsoever.
While this feature is new for Spotify, Apple Music users actually had this feature in its search function since 2018. Regardless, it’s better late than never. The new search feature is now available in the Spotify app on both Android and iOS platforms.
