As part of the PlayStation 5 announcement earlier, Square Enix unveiled Final Fantasy XVI. As expected, it will be a timed exclusive for the Sony console. There’s a very impressive trailer to go with it too.
The trailer itself doesn’t show much, but based on the gameplay, the combat seems to be action oriented, much like FFXV and the FF7 Remake. Characters also look a lot like those you see in the FFXIV MMO. Which makes sense, Naoki Yoshida, who is the producer and director of the MMO, is the one who is directing Final Fantasy XVI.
Another thing we know from the trailer is that it will be released on the PlayStation 5. But this is where things get a little confusing. In its initial iteration, the trailer states that game will also be available on PC. But Square Enix seems to have scrubbed that line from the latest version of the trailer.
At any rate, Final Fantasy XVI will be available in 2021 at its earliest. On Twitter, the producer says more will be shared next year, which hopefully includes a launch date. And hopefully Square Enix clarifies its plans for the game’s PC release, especially for those who saw the initial version of the trailer.
