If you happen to still own several older Sony A-mount lenses, you’ll be glad to know that they can now be used with the brand’s newer E-mount cameras. This is thanks to a recently unveiled LA-EA5 lens adapter which allows for the legacy lenses’ compatibility with shooters such as the Sony A7 III or the A6600.
Of course, an official lens adapter from Sony is not entirely new. Previously, the company had released older versions of the accessory including the LA-EA3 and LA-EA4 models to enable A-mount lenses to function on current-gen cameras. However, what sets the newer model apart from its predecessors is its compact size, with all of its added features housed in a cylindrical body.
Like the older models, the LA-EA5 isn’t just a simple A-mount to E-mount converter. It features a built-in autofocus (AF) drive which enables the function to work on older lenses that lack internal focus motors of their own. However, Sony noted that this feature is only available when using the A7R IV or a6600 camera models.
Other than that, the company claims that the adapter is able to deliver full support for focal plane phase-detection AF, wide-area focal phase-detection AF coverage, real-time Eye AF, and real-time Tracking and AF/AE tracking for SSM/SAM lenses at up to 11fps. Keep in mind that several features are dependent on which camera model that you’re using.
Compatible cameras with the LA-EA5 adapter include the Sony A7 III, A7R III – IV, A9 I & II, A7S III, a6100, a6400, and a6600. According to the company’s website, more devices will be added to the list in the near future. The new adapter will be available in October and is priced at US250 (~RM1,036).
