Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, and its free battle royale mode Warzone, are both massive in terms of file size. And even a patch for such a game can be massive. But few would have expected a patch to be two-thirds the size of the game itself. And that it what players of the game on Xbox One had experienced over the weekend.
The patch for Xbox One players comes in at 66.3GB. Devs for the game Infinity Ward explains that this is due to a bug in Microsoft’s patch delivery process, causing the re-downloading of already existing files. In comparison, on PC the patch size for Call of Duty: Warzone alone is 0.88GB, while the patch for the full Modern Warfare game with the battle royale mode is 1.83GB.
Due to an issue with Microsoft’s patch delivery process, this update requires a larger download for Xbox One players but does not impact the overall install size. Please check out our blog for patch notes and information on download sizes. https://t.co/0LCWjvrrpn

PS4 players generally only needed to download a patch that’s 1.2GB in size. But it would seem that some PS4 players are also seeing massive patch downloads for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, from 72GB to 92GB.

It’s especially unfortunate for those having to download such a massive patch that dropped over the weekend. Those without blazing fast download speeds will likely spend the whole weekend downloading the patch rather than playing the game. And sure enough, that seems to be the general reaction on Twitter.
