After Netflix blew up as the top streaming service around, streaming services in general started mushrooming. And a new one, called Mint Mobile Plus, has just popped up.
Ryan Reynolds made the announcement on Twitter, in his usual glib-sounding choice of words. He does claim that it is the most affordable service. But there’s a catch, at least for now, which is that it only has one movie that you can stream. And it’s his 2003 film, Foolproof.
Every tech company needs a streaming service. So… introducing Mint Mobile +. The world’s most affordable streaming service! pic.twitter.com/lSMzeurKp8

The Mint Mobile Plus website has multiple “categories”, like Original Originals and Unoriginal Originals. But they’re all the same film, Foolproof. And whichever option you pick, the film is free to stream. Though on the flip side, a followup tweet by Reynolds says that the service “should probably go down by the weekend”.
For context, Ryan Reynolds bought a stake in Mint Mobile, a telco in the US. Of course, it remains to be seen if this is one expensive attempt to troll, or just an expensive marketing stunt. But there’s probably a point to be made about that line of “every tech company needs a streaming service”. Who knows, Mint Mobile Plus may turn out to not be a large scale gag, and a serious endeavour after all.
