The Marvel’s Avengers game has come a long way since we first heard of it back in 2017. The game is now set to release next month, 4 September to be exact, for PC and current-gen consoles. But now, developer Crystal Dynamics has announced that PlayStation versions of the game will be getting Spider-Man as an exclusive character. This applies to both the PS4 and PS5.
Your friendly neighbourhood web slinger will not be available immediately, though. The launch lineup will still only consist of Ms. Marvel, Iron Man, Thor, The Hulk and Black Widow. Instead, Spider-Man will only be joining in the fray sometime in early 2021. But on the brighter side of things, he will be a free DLC, even if only for PlayStation.
Naturally, this isn’t good news for those who intend to get the game on PC or Xbox. And it will be especially bad if Spider-Man ends up having a unique kit that no other hero has. And judging from existing media on the game, this could very well be the case.
On one hand, Sony does have a strong hold on the character, from its movie rights to its PS4 game selling gangbusters. But on the other, it remains to be seen if this is an extension of said movie rights into the realm of video games as well, or if there’s an additional deal going on between Sony and Square Enix.
