After years in operation, Maybank has announced that its contactless payment app, Maybank Pay will be discontinued next month. Originally introduced in 2016, the app is generally designed for Android devices that are built with NFC feature.
However, MaybankPay only able to support the bank’s Visa cards which is not surprising since the app can only be used for on Visa payWave terminals. While the app is still available on Google Play at the moment, the FAQ document on Maybank’s website [pdf] stated that it will be taken out from circulation on 20 July 2020.
Additionally, the bank will also deactivate and delete all cards that customers have stored in the app. For customers that still want to use NFC-based payment method, Maybank suggested Samsung Pay as an alternative if they are using a Samsung device or shift to the QRPay feature on Maybank2u app.
As pointed out by Rnggt, the discontinuation of MaybankPay does not seem like the end of Maybank’s NFC journey though since the bank has also stated that “something more existing” is already in the pipeline. Well, we’ll keep you posted once we hear more from Maybank.
