Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin previously approved the Bantuan Prihatin Elektrik (BPE) program, which is an additional assistance package provided to all Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) domestic customers across the nation. Its aim is to reduce the burden of customers due to the increase in electricity bills experienced during the implementation of the Movement Control Order (MCO) within the period of April to June 2020.
So you may be wondering; how is BPE different to the previous PRIHATIN discount that was offered by the government? Here’s what you need to know:
What is Bantuan Prihatin Elektrik (BPE)?
BPE comes as a supplementary addition to the PRIHATIN discount that was provided to TNB customers. To be specific, the previous program provided discounts to electricity bills from April to December 2020, whereas BPE acts as an added assistance to ease customers’ burden for only the period of April to June 2020.
Is BPE applicable to everyone?
BPE is an additional assistance package provided by the Government to all domestic customers.
For those who use electricity amounting to 300kWh or less and receive a monthly electricity bill of RM77 and below will enjoy free electricity for the month of April, May and June 2020.
Customers who use over 300kWh, on the other hand, are entitled to receive a total of RM231 deducted from their July electricity bill – covering the month of April to June 2020.
When will the BPE be implemented?
The BPE benefits will be implemented and reflected in the July 2020 TNB bill. It will be a one-off supplement and will only cover the aforementioned months that saw high usage of electricity during the period of the MCO. Customers do not need to apply for BPE as it will be given automatically.
Can I use BPE to settle past outstanding amounts?
According to TNB, you are allowed to do so. As mentioned before, BPE is intended to be an additional assistance to ease the payment of electricity bills from April to June 2020.
Will I be notified once my meter has been read?
Yes. TNB will also provide you with a notice regarding the BPE in July after your meter has been read. You will also receive a July 2020 bill along with the notice* via mail to your premises within seven days time after the reading. Additionally, you can also obtain the bill and statement though the myTNB app or portal within 48 hours after the notice is received.
*Only applicable if you have received your actual bill in June 2020.
