Fans looking forward to playing Cyberpunk 2077 may have felt some disappointment after yesterday’s announcement of its delay by CD Projekt Red. However, the developer also revealed a bit of good news, at least for console owners.
In another announcement on 19 June, the Polish video game studio has revealed that those who have purchased Cyberpunk 2077 for their PlayStation 4 (PS4) or Xbox One are also able to play it on the upcoming PlayStation 5 (PS5) and Xbox Series X consoles for free.
We are happy to confirm that Cyberpunk 2077 will be backwards compatible with both next-gen consoles! Your PS4 copy of the game will work on PS5 on launch day. Anyone who buys the game on Xbox One will be able to play their copy on Xbox Series X when the console launches too!

CD Projekt Red added that on top of supporting backwards compatibility on both next-gen consoles, players will also receive a graphics upgrade to the game. This would ensure that their copy would also fully take advantage of the PS5 and Xbox Series X’s powerful hardware for a better visual experience.
On that note, the developer said that the upgrade would be the first step to provide gamers a true next-gen taste of Cyberpunk 2077. Another update will arrive sometime in 2021 for both PS5 and Xbox Series X versions of the game, which will offer a more beefier graphics overhaul.
“I can confirm this is not the final update,” said CD Projekt Red executive Michał Nowakowski during an investor call. “At some point we will have a more robust update for next-gen which we plan to give free of charge to anyone who purchases the PS4 or Xbox One version.
As previously reported, Cyberpunk 2077 is now slated for release on PC, PS4 and Xbox One on 19 November 2020.
