Publisher Electronic Arts (EA) has announced that Star Wars: Squadrons is now official. As previously reported, the new Star Wars game was accidentally leaked on the Microsoft Store a few days prior, which naturally brought some hype from fans before its recent unveiling.
Squadrons is developed by Motive Studios, an EA subsidiary based in Montreal, which previously contributed to several games from the publisher such as Star Wars: Battlefront II and Anthem. The game is played in first-person and will feature a full single-player campaign, as well as five-on-five multiplayer with cross-platform support.
The game will also allow players to experience it fully via VR on the PS4 and PC platforms. However, the publisher has not named any specific VR headsets that are compatible with the game on PC just yet.
The game’s single-player campaign will see players as pilots from both the New Republic’s Vanguard Squadron and the Galactic Empire’s Titan Squadron. Its story is set after the events of The Return of The Jedi, specifically after the Battle of Endor which saw the destruction of the second Death Star.
Following the footsteps of another Star Wars video game title, Jedi: Fallen Order by Respawn, both EA and Motive Studios have confirmed that Squadrons will not have any microtransactions whatsoever. The developer explained that the game will indeed feature items such as ship upgrades and a variety of cosmetic customisations, but assures that all of these will be earned exclusively through gameplay.
Speaking of which, EA will showcase more of Squadron’s gameplay during the company’s EA Play Live event on 18 June. The publisher also promised to display a variety of multiplayer modes during the stream, including Fleet Battles which will have players working together to take down an enemy capital ship.
Star Wars: Squadrons is set to be released on PC and current generation consoles such as the Xbox One and PS4 on 2 October 2020. The game is now available for pre-order on Steam and is priced at RM159. EA has yet to announce if the game will also be available on the upcoming PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X consoles.
