Total War series fans will be glad to know that Total War Saga: Troy, will be launching on 13 August. But at the same time, it will be a timed Epic Games Store exclusive for a year. But to sweeten what could be a bitter deal, it’s free for the first 24 hours.
It’s an unusual deal, to be sure. The game’s developers at Creative Assembly made this announcement on the Total War series blog. And they are quite open in explaining their decision of taking the exclusivity deal for Total War Saga: Troy.
As they explain it, Creative Assembly took the deal for a number of reasons. One was to diversify its business, and one way was to explore availability on digital stores beyond Steam.
The other was simply money, but it’s refreshing to see a dev being so honest about it. And as the devs say, Epic Games is paying for every free copy claimed, to make it special for the fans, in conjunction with the series’ 20th anniversary.
For what it’s worth, Creative Assembly says it doesn’t plan to make future Total War games EGS exclusives. Whether or not that will be the case remains to be seen. But as it is now, fans can either get it for free day one on the EGS, or wait for a year to pay for Total War Saga: Troy.
