In a joint announcement today, PDRM and MCMC have announced that members of the public will be able to update the destination for the interstate travel permit inside the Gerak Malaysia app starting from 4 May. As you might have heard before, the authorities will be allowing interstate travel for those who have stranded at their hometown since the beginning of Movement Control Order implementation on 18 March.
In order to do that, you just need to make sure that the Gerak Malaysia app in your device have been updated to the latest version, v2.0. If you are using Android devices, you already able to download the new version and update your destination in the app.
However, the update for iOS is expected to be available tonight or tomorrow morning according to MCMC’s Chairman, Al-Ishsal Ishak.
Members of the public will have until 5 May to input their destinations in the Gerak Malaysia app. PDRM will then analyze the data on 6 May in order to arrange its resources according to the expected movement of traffic during the special interstate travel arrangement from 7 to 10 May.
Interesting enough, the Director of Criminal Investigation Department for PDRM, CP Huzir Mohamed pointed out that the Gerak Malaysia app will not generate QR code for interstate travel or even a notification that you have been approved for the journey.
So, in general, as long as you register through Gerak Malaysia, you can then make the interstate travel according to the schedule provided by PDRM. If you are travelling as a family, PDRM also insists that all family members that aged 16 and above with access to smartphone should register for interstate travel through the app.
This is because the data from Gerak Malaysia is also being used to perform COVID-19 contact tracing during the interstate travel period, according to both CP Huzir and Chairman Al-Ishsal.
Meanwhile, CP Huzir also said that members of the public are given two days to complete their interstate journey. That being said, he also noted that if your vehicle is stopped for inspection, PDRM will be able to identify whether you have register for interstate travel through Gerak Malaysia or otherwise.
However, CP Huzir insists that PDRM will do its best not to disturb the flow of traffic. After all, this special interstate travel arrangement is expected to involved a large number of movement since up till earlier today, PDRM has apparently received 503,276 applications for interstate travel.
