Apple’s new iPhone SE has been out on the market for less than a week, but it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the folks over at iFixit have already dissected the device and tore it down. But while an earlier teardown by a Chinese YouTuber revealed the phone’s iPhone 8 guts, it was discovered that the phone’s camera module is identical to the iPhone 8’s, and not the iPhone XR.

According to iFixit, the sensor found in the iPhone SE 2020 is smaller and “practically a dead ringer for the one in 2017’s iPhone 8. And that said sensor was practically benefitting from the more recent A13 image processor.

Placed side-by-side, it’s easy to see how iFixit was able to come to the conclusion of it almost being a carbon copy of the module and how just how much bigger the camera module of the iPhone XR significantly is.

To be clear, neither iFixit or PetalPixel is implying that the camera sensor used in the iPhone SE 2020 is bad; how good a phone’s camera performs in photography and video performance is determined through a series of complex process. Shared between the image processor and the camera module being used.

On that note, it’s still not been ascertained just how well the new iPhone SE holds up, both as a daily driver and main shooter. Considering the ongoing COVID-19 situation as well, we’ll just have to wait until someone rates it, or until the phone crosses our palms.
