Facebook has launched a standalone Messenger app with a new group video chat feature for Windows and MacOS. While its arrival seems timely during this time of social distancing, the ability to host group video calls in the messaging platform is somewhat long overdue for non-mobile users.
In anycase, the new function allows you to keep in touch with friends and family easily by inviting them to a video call via Messenger. The desktop app will also sync with mobile versions, offer notifications for new messages, as well as offering Dark Mode and animated GIF support.
It goes without saying that the release of this new group video chat comes as Facebook’s response to the rise of video conferencing apps like Zoom, Skype and Google Hangouts due to the current situation. That said, the Messenger app is a good alternative to use as a majority of people across the globe are using Facebook to keep in touch with each other.
You can download the standalone app from the Microsoft Store or Mac App Store. As always, stay at home and stay safe.
