Both Rapid KL and Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) have announced changes to their service frequency last week. It would seem that the availability of public transport will be made even more limited during the Movement Control Order. Senior Minister Datuk Sri Ismail Sabri Yaakob has announced that they will only be allowed to operate between 6AM to 10AM, and 5PM to 10PM.
He said that this is among the areas where practicing social distancing is difficult. The senior minister also said that the number of public transport users drop significantly once the essential service workforce are already at their place of work. The combination of these two factors led to the limited schedule that was announced.
That being said, the public transport restriction ruling does not apply to taxis or e-hailing rides. The drivers of such services will still have to wear masks and practice social distancing during the ride.
On the surface, this shouldn’t affect those of us who are not working in essential services. But it could also affect those who rely on public transport to get groceries outside of the rush hour. This means you’ll have to plan your supply of groceries a little more carefully from now on.
