Lionsgate just dropped the first trailer for Run, a psychological horror/thriller from director Aneesh Chaganty. The film stars Sarah Paulson as an insane, controlling mother who has her claws deep in her daughter’s (Kiera Allen) back.
Chaganty’s first film, Searching, blew me away. The film is a technological thriller that plays out entirely on computer screens, streaming-video footage, cellphone cameras and iMessage text bubbles. That is what we see. That is all we see. But it isn’t a gimmick, or at least, it doesn’t feel that way, rather a technique that serves the narrative and its deeper themes. Searching is a smart, arresting and absolutely stirring whodunit-thriller, one that will keep your eyes glued to the screen, enraptured by the proceedings and analysing every single frame as it goes along. I remember watching the film a couple of years ago thinking, I can’t wait to see what Aneesh Chaganty has in store for us next.
Naturally, I’m excited to check out Run.
Official synopsis for Run:
They say you can never escape a mother’s love… but for Chloe, that’s not a comfort — it’s a threat. There’s something unnatural, even sinister about the relationship between Chloe (newcomer Kiera Allen) and her mom, Diane (Sarah Paulson). Diane has raised her daughter in total isolation, controlling every move she’s made since birth, and there are secrets that Chloe’s only beginning to grasp. From the visionary writers, producers and director of the breakout film Searching, comes a suspense thriller that shows that when mom gets a little too close, you need to RUN.
