In addition to its retail pricing and availability later this month, Touch ‘n Go today has also revealed the future roadmap of TNG RFID tag. Alongside toll payment, the company stated that it is already in discussion to allow the tag to be used for other purposes.
One of them is the ability to pay for parking using the TNG RFID tag. While TNG didn’t provide any information regarding the implementation, we foresee that it would work in a similar manner as per existing RFID implementation at toll plazas. TNG’s CEO, Syahrunizam Samsudin stated that the company already in discussion with top 20 shopping malls in Malaysia regarding this new feature.
Another future capability for TNG RFID that the company is working on is the ability for users to pay for their petrol. In other words, users can soon just drive their car to the petrol station, pump in petrol, and the payment would be done via TNG RFID system.
Syahrunizam has also revealed that TNG is already looking to enable the TNG RFID support for drive-thru service at food and beverages outlets. Even though he didn’t name any partners in the announcement today, the CEO did provide the implementation timeline for these new use cases.
As shown on the chart above, consumers can expect the support for car parks sometime in Q3 of this year while TNG RFID support at petrol station could take place as early as Q4. Additionally, the roll out at drive-thru eateries is expected to be available by Q1 2021.
For what it’s worth, the announcement of these upcoming use cases for TNG RFID comes at the right time. The way we looked at it, the TNG RFID tag does need additional capabilities to justify its RM 35 price tag after all.
