The PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X will both be capable of 8K resolution, as well as be able to push out 120fps. But for the latter, its makers say that they prefer more frames over more pixels.
Xbox head Phil Spencer said in an interview with Stevivor that he prefers to play games with higher frame rates over higher resolution. He said that he wanted games to feel as good as they look. And to that end, Microsoft will be focusing on “the feel” of the games, rather than just having more pixels.
Spencer also said that this isn’t possible in the current generation. This is because the current gen Xbox One, and its variants, have underpowered CPUs compared tho their GPUs.
That said, it doesn’t look like Microsoft will be limiting what developers do with their games. At least, Spencer says the company hasn’t really done so for the previous and current-gen Xbox.
Current-gen graphics are plenty impressive, but frame rates are still not quite there, especially when it comes to consistency. In a way, this is probably a good thing, at least for markets that are getting the Xbox Series X. Hopefully this serves as a cue for the PlayStation 5 to achieve something similar.
