Look, the Coronavirus is very serious stuff, but how can we not laugh at this story? Remember Steven Soderberg’s 2011 Sci-Fi-Thriller Contagion? Yeap, the pretty awesome film starring Matt Damon and Kate Winslet. Well, it looks like the film has suddenly become relevant in pop-culture again due to the recent coronavirus outbreak in China.
Contagion just cracked the top 10 of the iTunes movie rental charts. The film is currently ranked 6th, right above Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Parasite. It has also popped up on Apple TV’s ‘trending movies’ list. The title appears alongside films like Batman V Superman, The Dark Knight, Rogue One, The Fate of the Furious and classic 90s Hindi film, Kabhi Kushi Kabhie Gham. Newer titles on the trending list include Crawl and Rocketman.
Wondering what the film has to do with the coronavirus? Helmed by Steven Soderbergh from a script by Scott Z. Burns, Contagion follows the progress of a deadly airborne virus that kills people within days of being infected. As the epidemic rapidly grows, medical communities across the globe race to find a cure and control the increasing panic among global citizens. While all that is going on, regular folks try to make sense of it all and survive in a society that’s slowly losing its order.
Sound familiar?
Also, since we’re talking about it, I’d like to take the opportunity to wish everyone the best of health. Let’s be vigilant without panicking, and give medical professionals the room to do what they do best. Stay safe people!
