In the 3rd quarter of 2019, we reported that Lana Wachowski (formerly Laurence Wachowski), who wrote and helmed the original Matrix trilogy with her sibling, is set to write and direct a fourth film set in the world of The Matrix. Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss are set to reprise their roles as Neo and Trinity.
Since then, the cast has continued to expand. Jada Pinkett Smith and Lambert Wilson will also be reprising their roles alongside newcomers Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Aquaman), Jonathan Groff, Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother), and Jessica Henwick (Game of Thrones).
It looks like we can add Indian cinema star, Priyanka Chopra to the mix as well. According to Variety, Priyanka Chopra is in final talks to join the cast of The Matrix 4. This isn’t her first action movie rodeo. Over the course of the past few years, Priyanka Chopra has starred in a number of action flicks including Baywatch and the TV series Quantico. But honestly, the movies we’ve really loved her in have mostly come out of India — Bajirao Mastani and the absolutely fantastic gritty boxing film Mary Kom.
All that said, the news hasn’t been officially confirmed by Priyanka Chopra nor director Lana Wachowski. In the meantime, let’s hang tight and keep our fingers crossed.
Lana Wachowski is working on The Matrix 4 script together with Aleksander Hemon and David Mitchel. Note that the first three Matrix films were all penned by the Wachowski siblings only. But this could be a good thing. The Wachowskis have not made anything truly masterful since The Matrix. A lot of the times, their great ideas are ruined by convoluted and perhaps even self-indulgent screenplays. So, collaborating with other writers could be exactly what Lana Wachowski needs to finally make another great film.
The Matrix 4 is set for a 2021 release.
