As with most other major festive seasons, PLUS released its Travel Time Advisory (TTA) for the upcoming Chinese New Year. The number of vehicles along the North-South Expressway is expected to be over 2 million over this weekend. As such, the TTA is meant to help those traveling plan their journey.
PLUS recommends that, if you’re going very far north or south, you start your journey before 9AM. This includes Perlis, Kedah, Penang and Johor, as well as the northern parts of Perak. If your destination doesn’t take you as far, such as Negri Sembilan and Melaka, then you should start your journey after 12PM.
When heading back to Kuala Lumpur, Plus says you should start your journey before 9AM, regardless of where you’re from. There are some similarities to previous TTAs, like the segregation between states that are closer and further from Kuala Lumpur.
PLUS says that, according to its own analysis, travel time can increase up to 80% outside of the suggested time window. This is caused by the converging of traffic at “critical stretches” along the highway, leading to congestion.
If you’re planning to drive back to your hometowns this weekend for the CNY celebrations, it may be a good idea to plan your journey with this in mind. While you’re at it, you should also ensure your Touch ‘n Go cards are topped up sufficiently.
