In holy-balls-this-is-awesome-news, Taika Waititi, the helmer of Thor: Ragnarok and Thor: Love and Thunder, is currently in talks to direct a Star Wars movie after he’s wrapped up Thor 4, according to THR. Following Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, the galaxy far far away will be going on a short (big screen) hiatus until December 2022.
However, it is unclear if it’s the Taika Waititi film that will be gracing the big screens in 2022. My guess is, probably not as Thor: Love and Thunder is only set for a November 2021 release. It’s also unclear if this is the same project Kevin Feige is reportedly producing over at Lucasfilm or a completely separate one altogether. There are plenty of projects currently in development at Lucasfilm, including the one by Rian Johnson that seems to be in limbo.
Taika Waititi recently received a Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar nomination for Jojo Rabbit. Jojo Rabbit also received a Best Picture Oscar nod. And the stuff on his plate just seems to be piling up. The talented helmer has just wrapped up production of sports comedy Next Goal Wins, starring Michael Fassbender. He’s also attached to direct a live-action adaptation of Akira for Warner Bros.
And for those of you worried that Waititi’s unique vision and style wouldn’t be able to fit within the Star Wars universe, you need only watch the absolutely brilliant season finale of The Mandalorian.
