In a media briefing today, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) today has provided updates regarding 5G Demonstration Projects (5GDP) which is current phase of 5G rollout in Malaysia. Among new information that have come into the limelight is the current number of 5GDP throughout the country.
At the beginning of the phase back in October last year, there were 55 projects across 32 live sites throughout Peninsular Malaysia. The list has since grown to 72 projects and 56 live sites mainly through the addition of Penang as the latest state government to join the 5GDP phase.
According to MCMC Chairman, Al-Ishsal Ishak, most of the 17 new projects will indeed be located in Penang. In addition to that, the 5GDP phase in Penang will take place from February or March until June 2020.
In-depth details regarding these new projects have yet been released by MCMC although Al-Ishsal has pointed out that they will be involved multiple verticals. According to the slide above, the verticals includes manufacturing, smart city, tourism, entertainment/media, and smart transportation.
Location-wise, among those that are present on the presentation slide by MCMC are Bayan Lepas, Komtar, Padang Kota, Penang International Airport, and USM. We’ll keep you posted once we receive more info from MCMC.
