In a previous report, well-known industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggested that only the Pro variant of Huawei’s upcoming P40 smartphone would feature an impressive 10x periscope camera. Interestingly, an alleged production line photo of the standard P40’s camera housing was recently uploaded online which may confirm Kuo’s prediction.
The photo was uploaded on Weibo by a user known as “Ark咔嚓一下” and allegedly showcases a number of the P40’s rectangular camera housing prior to assembly. The housing features cutouts for three cameras and other functions such as LED flash or laser emitter/receiver.
One notable detail from the camera cutouts is that all three are circular. This could indicate that the P40 may not feature a periscope camera module, which are often square in shape. For now, it’s uncertain what are the three cameras featured but it’s a possibility that the smartphone might include an ultra-wide angle and a depth sensor, on top of having a main camera. If the leaks and rumours are accurate, leaving out an optical zoom feature on the standard P40 may disappoint most users.
While the aforementioned Weibo user claims that these camera housings are from the P40’s assembly line, it’s best that we take this supposed leak with a pinch of salt. According to Huawei CEO Richard Yu, we’ll find out more regarding the upcoming P40 series when it is fully unveiled later in March this year.
