We haven’t heard of the Sony Xperia name since the local announcement of the Xperia 5. That said, chances are there’s an upcoming phone bearing the Xperia name that will be entering the market next year. At least, based on a Geekbench screenshot.
Japanese site Android Next posted a screenshot of Geekbench running on a device known as K8220. While there’s no mention of Sony or Xperia, the model number is in line with the company’s naming of its phones. For instance, the Sony Xperia 1 had four model numbers: J8110, J8170, J9110, and J9150, while the Xperia 5 used the model numbers J8210, J8270 and J9210. The letter in front is believed to be the year the phones were announced. This suggests that the K8220 is a successor to the Xperia 5 for the year 2020.
Like the device itself, the phone’s chipset is not identified by name. That said, its identifier field says “ARM implementer 81 architecture 8 variant 15 part 2052 revision 14”. This is the same identifier for an OPPO PCRM00, which belongs to the OPPO Reno 3 Pro 5G. Considering this phone has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G chipset, it’s inferred that the upcoming Sony Xperia phone will come with the same.
Two other items on the spec sheet are 8GB of RAM and Android 10. Unfortunately, that’s all that can be gleamed from the screenshot. That is, of course, assuming the screenshot is real to begin with. If it is, then this is good news for fans of the Sony Xperia series of phones.
