The intriguing trailer for Black Widow, starring Scarlett Johansson, dropped last week to highly positive reactions from fans. Raise your hands if you popped your tits off watching David Harbour as Red Guardian. The film will be set in between the events of Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War and promises to be a psychological action-drama centred around the badass female character whose past has mostly been kept a mystery in the films, and her family who until this point was barely even mentioned in the MCU.
But what can we expect from the film? While I’m sure the film will deliver the goods as a standalone piece — we have no reason to doubt director Cate Shortland, considering her previous two indie films, Berlin Syndrome and Lore were pretty damn good — one has to wonder if Black Widow will influence the larger MCU canon in a significant way. After all, that’s what a good prequel/spin-off does. Rogue One, comes to mind. Will Black Widow provide a similar experience? Perhaps. Marvel Studios chief, Kevin Feige says so. In an interview with IGN, Feige had this to say:
We had this thought of exploring a little bit of her past that we hadn’t seen before and how that impacts the adventure she had between Civil War and Infinity War. And in fact, there are things that she does in Infinity War and Endgame that you’ll see in a new light once you see the Black Widow.
While I kind of wish this movie came out in chronological order, before the release of Infinity War, I’m still super pumped to catch it. Black Widow looks to be a James Bond-esque (Daniel Craig era) espionage picture that would certainly add another dimension to the already awesome character.
Black Widow hits Malaysian cinemas on 30 April 2020.
