Black Adam has been in development for years. Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson who’s attached to star in the film as the popular Shazam baddie, has expressed his excitement for the project for a very long time. Perhaps there was always a concern if the movie will do well at the box office, considering it’s an origin story of a relatively unknown villain. Perhaps it’s the massive success of Joker that has convinced everybody over at Warner Bros/DC that the film very well could work (though Joker is a far more popular character than Black Adam). Maybe it’s that mixed with the fact that Shazam was a small box office success earlier this year, grossing over $US 365 million with a $US 90 million production budget.
Well, whatever the case, we’re getting the film! I’m ready! Warner Bros. has finally announced a release date for the movie and released a poster featuring concept art of Johnson as Black Adam. The supervillain movie will hit the big screen on 22 December 2021 (probably 21 December 2021 here in Malaysia). Over the past couple of years, the late December release date has been very kind to both DC and The Rock as Aquaman and Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle were both massive hits at the box office.
Here’s a brief description of Black Adam via DCcomics.com:
Thousands of years before Billy Batson became a magically-empowered hero, the wizard Shazam selected another champion. Teth-Adam or “Mighty Adam” began as a hero of humanity, but then allowed his power to corrupt his ideals and desires. Now labelled Black Adam, he was exiled by Shazam, but returned in the modern-day. A frequent enemy to Earth’s heroes, Black Adam believes he is the right person to lead humanity and any action he takes is necessary for the greater good.
