During the closing remarks of Level Up KL Biz 2019 today, the Communications and Multimedia Minister, Gobind Singh Deo has revealed that Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) will be opening up a Worldwide Studios (WWS) division right here in Malaysia. According to the minister, the studio will be opened in Kuala Lumpur next year.
While details are rather scarce at the moment, the official information we have received so far indicated that one of the main responsibilities for SIE WWS Malaysia (yes, that is indeed its official name) is art and animation services to cater for the development of exclusive PlayStation titles.
Announced in the presence of Shuhei Yoshida, a PlayStation-veteran who was previously the President of SIE WWS and is now leading SIE’s newly formed indie-oriented division, the new studio will also act as the regional point for SIE WWS in Southeast Asia.
Prior to this announcement, SIE WWS has already consisted of 14 game studios throughout the world. These studios are responsible for plenty of blockbuster first-party PlayStation franchises and titles such as God of War, The Last of Us, Uncharted, Gran Turismo, and Horizon Zero Dawn.
While SIE WWS Malaysia’s main responsibilities at the moment is limited to art and animation for now, we hope that the studio will be able to grow itself soon enough and provided the opportunity to develop full-fledged PlayStation game from the ground-up.
