Ang Lee (Life of Pie, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon) is one of those directors who loves experimenting with cinematic technology and formats. His latest obsession? 3D in High Frame Rate.
Lee’s previous film, Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk, was the first feature film in history to be shot using 120 Frames Per Second (FPS). Gemini Man starring Will Smith, is also shot using this format. But what is its purpose exactly? The whole idea is to provide audiences with an amplified and fully immersive 3D experience.
Most films are shot in 24 FPS and with more frames per second, you get more depth. While that’s true, it will also make the images look unrealistically smooth and almost resemble a video game.
That said, there are only a small number of theatres in the world that are able to project a film in 120 FPS. The next best way to watch Gemini Man (as intended by the filmmaker) is through ‘3D+ in HFR’, a digital format of 60 FPS.
Here’s the list of cinemas in Malaysia that will be screening Gemini Man in 3D+ HFR.
*Do note that not every single hall in the locations listed below will be screening the film in that format, so please double-check the showtimes of 3D+ HFR before you purchase your ticket.
