Snapchat has announced that it is adding a new camera mode that able to create interactive 3D selfies. For now, the 3D camera mode is exclusive to users with iPhone X or newer.
To make it work, head to the 3D Camera mode and take a selfie. From there, you can add effects and filters from the 3D Lenses and Filters section. In the preview, you can rotate and wiggle to see the effects come to life before posting it on your Snapchat. The 3D selfies captured on Snapchat can be shared in the app, or saved on the user’s camera roll internally to be shared on somewhere else.
The new feature makes use of the TrueDepth front-facing camera on these devices and able to recreate 3D model by combining both image and depth data. Even though the feature is exclusive to iPhones, other devices can still view the 3D selfie. However, selfies that are shared outside of Snapchat will not retain the 3D perspective feature.
At the time of writing, Snapchat did not mention if this new 3D selfie feature will be released to Android devices anytime soon. Nevertheless, the company did point out that the feature will eventually be released to additional devices.
