The female-centric DC supervillain team-up film, Birds of Prey helmed by Cathy Yan is set to undergo reshoots very soon. (Note: Reshoots are very normal in the film industry and are nothing to worry about unless reports suggest otherwise.) Interestingly enough, it looks like director of the John Wick trilogy, Chad Stahelski, will be helping Yan out with some of the action scenes to “beef up the wow factor.”
Per Collider:
Stahelski is coming in to oversee second unit photography on Birds of Prey, and though he’ll remain uncredited for his work, he’s the perfect person for Warners to turn to as it aims to maximize its investment in this female-driven Suicide Squad spinoff starring Margot Robbie. Stahelski is already creatively invested in the project, as his company 87 Eleven has been working on the movie’s stunts since production started.
In big-budget productions, second unit directors are usually responsible for shooting supplementary footage, including stunts and action sequences. Considering this is Yan’s first big-budget film and only her second feature film in general, I think it’s a great idea to bring on someone like Chad Stahelski to polish up the action scenes. Yan’s previous film is the critically acclaimed Dead Pigs, which won a Special Jury Prize at Sundance 2018. I’m sure Yan will deliver a strong, character-driven film.
Chad Stahelski began his career as a stuntman — he was Keanu Reeves’ stunt double in The Matrix — before going on to be a second unit director and finally went on to helm the successful John Wick franchise. Stahelski was the second unit director of Captain America: Civil War, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and many more.
Birds of Prey stars Margot Robbie, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Ali Wong, Jurnee Smollett-Bell and Ewan McGregor. Its screenplay is written by Christina Hodson (Bumblebee).
Birds of Prey is set for a February 2020 release.
