Joe and Anthony Russo, more commonly known as the Russo brothers are one of the hottest directors in Hollywood right now. The duo first garnered some buzz for their work behind the camera on the cult hit sitcom, Community. Later, they were brought on by Kevin Feige to direct Captain America: The Winter Soldier. The decision wasn’t met with much fanfare. Some wondered if these sitcom directors even had what it takes to helm a big-budget feature film. However, The Winter Soldier turned out to be an absolute banger. The Russos crafted a nuanced, genre-transcending superhero film that received widespread critical acclaim. Many, myself included still consider The Winter Soldier to be one of the best MCU movies ever made.
The Russo brothers then proceeded to deliver one great Marvel Cinematic Universe film after another — Captain America: Civil War, Infinity War and Endgame — all of which are extremely well received by fans and critics alike. Not only that, Infinity War and Endgame also smashed box office records, grossing over $US 2 billion dollars worldwide each; the latter is currently the highest-grossing movie of all time. So, it’s only natural that fans desperately want them to continue directing these Marvel movies. However, after the release of Endgame, the directing duo mentioned that they’re done making Marvel movies, at least for now.
But if you’d like something to dream about, this next quote just might be it. In a recent Reddit AMA session hosted by the Russo siblings, a fan asked which superhero movie they’d most like to direct that they haven’t already. The Russos kept things straightforward:
“We’ve always loved us some Wolverine.”
Of course, this does not mean that they’re definitely going to be helming the Wolverine/X-Men film when Marvel Studios does decide to introduce the character into their universe, but it certainly exciting to think about. On the one hand, who wouldn’t want the directors of some of the greatest comic book movies ever made to get their hands on one of the coolest comic book characters ever? On the other hand, it would also be great if Marvel Studios could bring in another filmmaker from TV or the independent scene. You’ll never know, they very well could be the next Russo brothers.
