While AMD’s mid-range Radeon RX 5700 XT and RX 5700 series graphics cards have received praises both from us and others in the industry, there are many among us who are holding for the brand’s enthusiast-level versions of Navi. On that note, we may not have to wait too long for said graphics card, if what Dr. Lisa Su, CEO of AMD, is to be believed.
During a 2nd quarter earnings call, Dr Su spoke about her company’s 7nm high-end Navi GPU and 7nm mobile CPUs. Stating that the products were on their way, and that the company has a “rich 7nm portfolio beyond the products that we have already announced in the upcoming quarters”. While lacking details, Dr Su’s comments more or less hint at the likelihood of AMD actually releasing an answer to NVIDIA’s higher end GeForce RTX 2080 Super and RTX 2080 Ti cards.
That hasn’t stopped rumours from floating around about AMD’s upcoming high-end Navi, though. As per one rumour, the high-end Navi variant may end up being called Navi 12 – as opposed to the Radeon RX 5700 series’ Navi 10 – and will feature 4096 Stream Processors and 64 Compute Units (CUs). For further context, the current RX 5700 XT has 2560 Stream Processors and 40 CUs.
Again, we don’t know if AMD intends on launching its high-end Navi this year in the following year. However, if we were to follow AMD’s launch trend of the last several years, it wouldn’t surprise us if the CPU brand ends up making a surprise announcement just before Christmas or slightly earlier than that.
