Avengers: Endgame was released in theatres about 8 weeks ago to rave reviews. The film also smashed all sorts of box office records, including being the first film in history to gross over $US 1 billion worldwide in its opening weekend and also the fastest film to cross the $US 2 billion mark (12 days, compared to Avatar’s 47). However, having amassed $US 2.74 billion to date, one record it hasn’t been able to beat is Avatar‘s $US 2.78 billion box office gross to become the new highest grossing film of all time.
The biggest reason is perhaps Endgame‘s release date. The 22nd Marvel Cinematic Universe movie was released during the crowded summer period. The following weeks after Endgame saw the release of Pokemon: Detective Pikachu, Aladdin, Godzilla: King of the Monsters and Dark Phoenix. While those movies have no chance of beating the conclusion of the Infinity Saga at the box office, they certainly deterred repeat viewings a little bit. In other words, instead of watching the Avengers whoop Thanos for the 47th time, perhaps I’ll go see Godzilla and Rodan beat each other up instead. On the flip side, Avatar had a December release date and faced no roadblocks until How to Train Your Dragon was released in March 2010 — that’s 3 months later! We also have to remember that Avatar has had multiple releases over the years.
Well, it looks like Disney/Marvel Studios aren’t going to lay their swords down that easily. In an interview with Screen Rant, Kevin Feige mentioned that Avengers: Endgame will be re-released in theatres on June 28. The film isn’t an extended/directors’ cut but will contain a couple of bonus scenes after the credits.
“Not an extended cut, but there will be a version going into theaters with a bit of a marketing push with a few new things at the end of the movie. If you stay and watch the movie, after the credits, there’ll be a deleted scene, a little tribute, and a few surprises. Which will be next weekend.”
And if you’re wondering if Endgame will be rereleased in Malaysia, well the short answer is: most likely. TGV Cinemas took to their Facebook page to write “will this [Avengers: Endgame rerelease] be happening in TGV Cinemas, you ask? Well, I can tell you that you should pay very close attention to our page for exciting announcements to come!”
This news has split the internet. While some people are beyond excited to relive Endgame on the big screen, others think it’s nothing more than a cheap stunt to beat Avatar‘s box office.
“Re-releasing #AvengersEndgame with new footage just to beat Avatar’s box office record is cheating!”
Maybe… but Avatar did the exact same thing to beat Titanic, sooooooo… 🤗

This is a pretty cheap move made simply to beat 'Avatar's box office record. If you ask me, once 'Avengers: Endgame' surpasses it, it'll always carry an asterisk on the official record that it needed a re-release/new marketing push to take 'Avatar' down. https://t.co/6ACcF8dVX9

There’s a difference between Avatar being re-released and Endgame…Endgame is saying “with added footage”. So there are doing what video game companies are ripped apart for with paid DLC. I don’t remember, did Avatar add anything extra in its re-release?
