Now that we’ve locked in our hero — Robert Pattinson has been cast as the Caped Crusader in Matt Reeves The Batman — it’s time to shift our focus to the villain/villains. Batman arguably has the best Rogues’ Gallery in all of comic book and knowing who he’s going to square off against on the big screen is just as exciting as knowing we’re getting a Batman movie altogether in the first place.
According to The Hollywood Reporter’s Heat Vision newsletter, the two villains that will be featured in Matt Reeves’ Batman film are Penguin and Catwoman. It is reported that Reeves will not begin casting these villains until Pattinson closes his deal, which is believed to be anytime now.
Apart from The Joker, Penguin and Catwoman are probably the most popular bad guys in The Dark Knight’s Rogues’ Gallery, right up there with The Riddler and Two-Face. The Penguin and Catwoman were previously featured together in Tim Burton’s hyper gothic take on the comic book character, Batman Returns 1992, respectively embodied by Danny Devito and Michelle Pfeiffer. Catwoman made another big screen appearance in 2012, this time in Christopher Nolan’s grounded and gritty The Dark Knight Rises. Both of these characters have also recently made live-action appearances in Fox’s Gotham, a series chronicling Gotham City during the younger, pre-Batman days of Bruce Wayne.
The Batman is one of the most intriguing projects currently being developed over at DC/Warner Bros. It’s written and set to be helmed by Matt Reeves, who previously directed the highly acclaimed Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and War for the Planet of the Apes. Matt Reeves is currently finalising the script of the DC film and pre-production is expected to start later this summer.
The Batman is set to hit theatres in June 2021.
