Don’t bother pinching yourself. It’s not a dream. Rumours have been circulating for months now, but it looks like we’ve finally gotten some concrete news. Robert Pattinson is currently in talks to play the next Batman in Matt Reeves’ upcoming film centred around the Caped Crusader. Yeap, you read that right! Variety reports that “while it’s not yet a done deal, it’s expected to close shortly, with Pattinson as the top choice. Warner Bros. had no comment.”
Honestly, this is a brilliant idea. Most people who dislike Robert Pattinson only know him from his Twilight days, in which he played a pretty boy Vampire who sparkled in the sun. However, since then, Pattinson has grown into one of the most underrated raw talents working in world cinema today. In his post-Twilight career, Robert Pattinson has been starring in compelling and gritty roles that challenge him as an actor. Think I’m talking nonsense? Go check out films like The Rover, The Childhood of a Leader and The Lost City of Z and then get back to me. In fact, we wrote an entire feature on why Robert Pattinson could actually be a great Batman.
We also have to consider the film’s director, Matt Reeves. After all, he’s the man who helmed the absolutely gripping Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and War for the Planet of the Apes, both of which received critical and financial acclaim. He has previously stated that his rendition of Batman is going to explore the character’s detective side. It’ll be a noir film focusing on a younger Bruce Wayne, following his journey as he comes to grips with his new identity as The Dark Knight. As evident from the Apes films, Reeves certainly knows how to create compelling character arcs and he will not cast someone unless he knows they’re absolutely suited for the role.
Matt Reeves is currently finalising the script of the DC film and pre-production is expected to start later this summer. The Batman is set to hit theatres in June 2021.
