While most of us know Intel as the maker of the processors that power our laptop and desktop PCs, the company does produce plenty of other products as well. Among its recent effort includes 5G modem for smartphone although the company has since decided to cease its work on the product.
In its announcement, Intel stated that it is no longer able to determine positive impact or profitability from the smartphone modem business on the company. That being said, the company has said that it will continue to meet its existing commitment on 4G smartphone modems.
Additionally, Intel will continue to work on its 5G network infrastructure business. At the same time, the company is also looking for prospective opportunities for 4G and 5G modems in PC.
Since Intel is the alternative modem supplier to Apple, it is not known whether the company’s decision to shelve its 5G smartphone modem was related to the announcement made by its client and Qualcomm. Nevertheless, the company stated that it will shed more lights on the decision at its Q1 2019 earnings call later this month.
