Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy is easily one of, if not the best comic book based TV series of the past few years, right up there with Daredevil, Jessica Jones and The Punisher. So, it comes as no surprise that the streaming giant has decided to renew its weird, dark and totally punk rock superhero series for a second season.
According to Netflix, the likes of Ellen Page, Tom Hopper, David Castaneda, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Robert Sheehan, Aiden Gallagher, and Justin Min are all returning to the fold. On top of that, there will also be new cast members that will be announced at a later date.
There aren’t many changes happening behind the camera too, with Steve Blackman (Fargo) returning as the showrunner and the likes of comics creator Gerard Way (My Chemical Romance frontman) Gerard Way and illustrator Gabriel Ba returning to executive produce. It’s reported that season 2 will once again have 10 hourlong episodes. Production is set to start this summer, so expect the show to drop in 2020.
The Umbrella Academy is truly unique in tone. It is exactly how you picture a series based on comics written by the lead singer of My Chemical Romance would be: edgy, cool, unabashedly weird and covered in mascara. But it’s also a character study, one that explores the dynamics of a broken family, identity and also trauma. I can’t wait for season 2!
