Despite its mediocre critical reviews (56% on Rotten Tomatoes with an average rating of 5.96/10), The Greatest Showman turned out to be one of the most popular movies of 2017. Not only did the Hugh Jackman-starring musical get an A on Cinemascore, it also went on to gross more than US$434 million at the global box office, with a mere US$84 million budget. Now it looks like we could be getting a sequel.
In a recent interview with BBC Radio 2, Jackman was asked about The Greatest Showman and whether or not a sequel is in the works. At first, the Australian star was reluctant to answer.
“The real answer is ‘could be’, I’m not sure. I’m being completely honest with you, there is talk of something going around but no one is really sure… No one is really sure right now, so that’s the honest truth.”
Eventually, though, Hugh Jackman admits that a sequel to The Greatest Showman is indeed in the works.
“But I think someone is working on a treatment for something… I know they are, they’re working on a treatment for something.”
This is of course great news for fans of the musical. However, do keep in mind that none of this is officially confirmed by any of the major production companies that made the first movie a reality. It’s not uncommon for movies to be in active development without actually seeing the light of day.
And if you’re wondering if Jackman himself would be returning to the sequel (if it does indeed happen, of course), that remains to be seen too. The X-Men actor had this to say:
“I don’t know. I would like to be part of it, for sure, and I don’t know if it would be centred on my character. The other thing is, it did take eight years to get [the first movie] made and that wasn’t all eight years of convincing people. It takes a long time to write stuff.”
